Meet Amy Murphy

Dr. Amy C. Murphy also teaches at Syracuse University as a Teaching Associate Professor in the Department of Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition, where she has taught since the Fall of 2019. Prior to joining Syracuse University, Dr. Murphy was a professor of literature and writing at Green Mountain College in Vermont from 2012-2019. She also taught writing and literature at San Antonio College from 2005-2011 and at Antonian College Preparatory High School from 2003-2005. Before working as an educator in San Antonio, Dr. Murphy served as a professor of language and literature at Texas A&M-Kingsville, and as a visiting professor of literature and writing at Oklahoma State University. She holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Arizona, and both an M.A. and B.A. in English from the University of Florida.

Dr. Murphy has written and presented on faculty development and writing across the curriculum, as well as the rhetoric of paternalism in the industrial novels and popular culture of nineteenth-century Britain. She currently is working on both a fiction and non-fiction project.

Dr. Murphy has taught writing and composition for over 20 years and has an expertise and interest in helping students improve their writing skills. She enjoys serving students and building their confidence as writers and thinkers as they prepare themselves for their chosen career paths.

She resides both in New York and Vermont, and is a Texas native from San Antonio. She and her husband love animals, and they currently have a yellow labrador retriever, Luna, and two indoor cats, Hamlet and Charlotte. She enjoys cooking for friends and family and caring for a flock of chickens in Vermont. She and her husband have two college-age children who live in Canada, and they enjoy visiting them there as well as traveling when they can.
